The Things That Are Not
Even among angels, there are misfits. Finnick is a messenger, in the lower ranks of Heaven, who has only ever done what he was supposed to. His unrecognized love for humans has long made him yearn for greater purpose in the war and he dares to believe that an angel can be more than they are designed for. The realm of angels is teeming over news of an agreement between God and the Devil. Time as we know it is shifted to facilitate a rematch and history will repeat itself in a modern age. Everyone is abuzz over who among them will be chosen to protect the new Virgin Mary as she carries a twenty-first century Messiah. As all the warriors and miracle workers of Heaven prepare, Finnick’s hope for glory is quashed when he is assigned to do what he does best; watch over a human on Earth--only this time...it may be different.
Bob is a neurotic nobody, down on his luck and yearning for a life he let slip away. Adventure ensues when Finnick comes to be his guide through the shifting of time. As the modern nativity approaches, new battles arise and these two misfits struggle to find their place amidst a world they do not know. An angel who appreciates a simple human life and a man who is unsatisfied and thirsty for glory. With the question of Mary’s protector still burning, Finnick and Bob might just discover that they both need to learn a thing or two from each other about being a nobody and prove their true worth.

Based on my favourite verse from 1 Corinthians, this book has meant a lot to me. My favourite thing about God is that he loves the losers, the downtroddeN, the outcast and the sinner.
This novel serves as sort of a prequel to my debut series 'The Baptist', in which time shifts and biblical events happen in our modern world instead. There's a scene in those books in which a modern day Mary and Joseph are on the run from militia soldiers and darker forces, when Joseph sees a brief glimpse of the Spiritual Realm of Angels and Demons. There is an Allusion to a battle between the demon who has been chasing them all night, and the angel who stops it. I always wanted to go back and write a book all about that character. This is that book!
Somewhere along the line, I melded the idea of that battle and this idea of a misfit angel. The more I thought about how to craft the angel who would be chosen to defend the birth of Christ, the more I was reminded of the verse in 1 Corinthians, which speaks specifically about just how God chooses who will do things. He ultimately picks all the things man would never pick; the most unlikely choice, to reveal his glory and power to us.
There's a line in this book that's meant to encourage Mary. She is speaking about how scared she is and how unworthy she feels to be chosen to deliver Christ and about how she is the most nothing of nothings, and her aunt encourages her in saying that if that's the case, than there is hope for everyone, because that's how God does it, and that's how important and loved we are by him.
This book is meant to celebrate our imperfection as a human race and how to learn to embrace our humanity as well as be humbled in our nothingness. It's about learning to be nothing and coming to accept how that is everything!
